Perinatal & postnatal support

Maybe becoming a parent hasn't felt the way you expected — more anxious, more overwhelming, or more lonely than anyone prepared you for. Maybe you're pregnant and finding the uncertainty hard to sit with, or you're in the early, disorienting months after birth and struggling to feel like yourself. These feelings are more common than people tend to say out loud.

How Sage works with this

Support during the perinatal period may cover anxiety, low mood, identity shifts, and the adjustment of early parenthood, using an attachment-informed lens on both your own experience and your relationship with your baby.

What therapy for this looks like

Sessions are a space to process the emotional realities of pregnancy, birth and early parenting — without judgment, and without needing to perform gratitude you might not feel. This may include support with anxiety, adjustment, identity change, and the relationship you're building with your child.

A note on crisis support

If you're having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please contact emergency services on 000, or Lifeline on 13 11 14, or present to your nearest emergency department. This form and this website are not monitored for emergencies.

Common questions

Is this only for new mothers?

Perinatal support can be relevant to anyone navigating pregnancy, birth, loss, or early parenthood — including partners.

What's the difference between the 'baby blues' and perinatal anxiety or depression?

The baby blues are common, brief, and usually settle within a couple of weeks after birth. Perinatal anxiety or depression tend to be more persistent and significant, and may benefit from extra support.

Can I start therapy while pregnant, or does it need to wait until after birth?

You can begin at any point in the perinatal period — during pregnancy, or after birth — whenever feels right for you.
